The importance of the Internet for businesses cannot be understated. With tens of billions being spent via e-commerce, email and web browsing having long since overtaken traditional communications it has never been more important for a company to have the right Internet infrastructure. One of the fundamentals of doing business on the web is that smaller business can compete and win but with smaller budgets than large companies. From having the right domain name, utilising high-speed connectivity through to having the ability to take orders on line Business Serve has a service range that helps you get ahead.
A web site must bring in more than it costs, email and browsing must get you the information you need without damaging your business productivity by allowing Viruses, Spam and Unsavoury Content getting in the way. Having made an investment in the Internet you must maximise the value of your brand and convert your site visitors to customers and use email as an effective marketing tool. Our services aim to help you do all of these things at a reasonable cost and are packaged in such a way that you can make your choices service by service as your on-line brand develops. Together with extended hours Customer Support and a carrier –class data centre and National network Business Serve will help you get the most from the web and grow your business around it.
First things first you need a domain name. This can be your company name or a generic one. I.e. if you are advertising dolphin spotting then www.dolphinspotting.co.uk would be a good generic domain name. However some of the better ones have gone, unless you have a great imagination. For example you know how people text each other nowadays with numbers for instance c u l8r, obviously meaning see you later. Well you could think along those lines. Visit www.domainnamesgb.com part of the Business Serve Group to have a look at available domain names.
Once you have chosen your domain name you will require some added services. For instance Web Hosting, this is space on a server that you will require if you are intending to put a website together, (we'll talk about websites later) you will also require an email address (POP3). This is more of a marketing tool. When you have your stationery printed up and you have your domain name on there then it would be nice to be able to quote an email address that is related to your company rather than a hotmail or yahoo account.
Now you have your company name and your hosting set up. What is the next step?
Ultimately you probably want to set up a website. This can be done either by yourself with our new software package called Premier WebBuilder or we will put your site together with the content that you request.
Build your own webshop? The thought sounds crazy. But having your own e-commerce website could do wonders for your online business.

It cuts down on staffing levels, keeps stock control to a minimum, less overheads too and if you look at the cost of ours along with the costs of maintaining your hosting services, it is extemely inexpensive. Return On Investment
How to get the most from an Investment (ROI) from a web site.
Looking to make more money from your website? Getting thousands of ‘hits’ has become the holy grail for online businesses but how to achieve such as high impact site has not only become harder but also much more expensive. Search Engines are responsible for about 80% of traffic to commercial websites and Google, Yahoo and MSN dominate the Search Engine market. Changes in how the market operates in recent months has persuaded thousands of businesses to sign up to Pence Per Click (PPC) programmes (the main players being Google Adwords, Overture and e-Spotting who have racked up over a Billion dollars of revenue in this market in a very short time) This has since become the only way to guarantee front page listings. We advise all customers, therefore, to first concentrate on conversion of traffic before marketing the site.
But before you even think about spending money on Search Engine marketing consider this:
If you were about to run an expensive marketing campaign such as a magazine advert you would first ensure that you had stock, brochures, staff trained to answer calls and that the phone number on the advert was operational. Then you’d start your campaign. Web site marketing works in exactly the same way. You must ensure that your site runs quickly, that your links work, that the content is interesting enough to encourage visitors to return and that you can get enquiries through a feedback form or, ideally get orders through an on-line ordering system. Then, by all means market your site - and that includes Google Adwords and other PPC programs, which we happily recommend for any conversion-ready web site.
Namebay provides free advice plus a range of service options to help you get to that conversion-ready position and will help you make Return On Investment (ROI) Please do call us if you need advice or a free Web Site health-check or click here to view the ultimate traffic - customer conversion tool, Premier Web Builder.
The trick to getting ROI is to follow a three-part strategy
- Build a site that attracts traffic
- Make the site ‘sticky’
- Convert visitors to customers (if you can’t do this last one the first two are pointless!)
All easier said than done but if you follow the advice in Namebay.co.uk on how to do these three things, purchase the tools if you want (but without any obligation), then you will make more money from you web business in the future than you do at the present. There are no guarantees in Search Engine marketing (just like there are none in traditional marketing). If you are approach someone using that ‘G’ word then check out the small print and you may find out they’re using a lot of poetic license. But follow the three-point plan, ALL of it, and you won’t go far wrong.
Building traffic.
There are a number of ways to build traffic and we consider each of them here:
Have a memorable domain name
Namebay.co.uk is primarily focussed on the most obvious one; ensure your URL is one that everyone can remember. Each of us will remember an occasion when we saw a domain name on a billboard or the side of a van and vowed to visit that web site when we get to the office only to find that we couldn’t remember the URL when we got there! Fredsmithandsonswindows.biz doesn’t really do the job when marketing a website. If, however, Fred Smith built his web site around double-glazing.co.uk then that’s an entirely different matter. We would remember that name without having to write it down and would be much more likely to visit and come back again, eventually making an enquiry. As an added benefit, the fact that the phrase ‘double-gazing’ is in the URL also helps with Search engine ranking (more of which later). Fred can still have Fredsmithandsonswindows.biz because existing customers may use it and it might be on his company stationery, but the two could co-exist with one domain name pointing to the other. Namebay name are simple generic domain names available for resale that are memorable and thus good for marketing a web site.
Some of the highly featured names have been pre-configured with the tools listed elsewhere on the site so they are ready to use. For example, five of the Top 10 names come with a Premier Web Shop, Keyword Analysis and Search Engine Monthly Reports already built in so you can begin trading straight away. Ask your Account Manager nicely and we may even add some of your personal content to the Premier Web Shop for you as long as you provide us with the text you wish to use.
Use the right keywords
Build killer content
If you do nothing else please do this bit. Given the fact that Search Engines drive most web site hits it’s important that you build your web site to be Search Engine friendly. There’s a whole industry built around trying to understand how the major Search Engines rank sites. It’s a carefully guarded secret on how they do it; what we do know is that they change the way it’s done regularly so, just as you think you’ve got it right, Google reshuffle the pack and you have to think again! However there are some base rules that have remained consistent for years and the golden rule is this.
If you want to get better results from Search Engines then you need to write better content on your web site.
By content we mean text. Search Engines rank sites by sending a small software package to read what the site is about. It gathers data and then uses a very complex algorithm to rank the site according to how relevant it is against searches and how good an experience their users will get by visiting the site.
The software they use is called a ‘spider (or a robot. We’ll stick with spiders for now). Spiders cannot read pictures – they can only read text. Humans, on the other hand like lots of pictures in a site. The challenge is to get the balance right. You need lots of text to get traffic from Search Engines. Having got the traffic you need more pictures to keep the customer interested.
There are some base rules to follow when writing text for your site:
· Plenty of pages. A one or two page web site will not do. You need at least six pages and preferably more
· Each page should have around three hundred words of text
· The text should include liberal use of the keywords that you wish to be found under with Search Engines. Ideally around 7% of the words should be the keywords. This might not make for perfectly good English but it works in getting traffic.
· The keywords should be denser at the top of the page. Spiders are looking for relevancy; is this site about the subject my users is searching for. If you don’t mention the phrase until paragraph two then the answer is ‘no’ and you won’t get a ranking
Make the site work properly
In this respect spiders are more like humans. They get just as annoyed as we do when links don’t work, pages don’t load quickly, forms do not work and so on. As the spider crawls through the site it will follow each link, reading and ranking the content as it goes. If it follow a link that goes nowhere one of two things happen. Firstly, the algorithm picks up this fault and marks the site down. More importantly, if the spider cannot follow the link then it doesn’t get to the page behind that link and so it cannot read the text and rank the page. If all you killer content is on that page and beyond, blocking the spider from getting there is not a smart move! The same goes for your end users. What’s the point in having you market shattering special offer on a page that no-one can get to because the link hasn’t worked?
Get the right links
The other must have in terms of getting better Search Engine performance is to have links to and from other websites that are of a similar subject. You might find it odd that you can be rewarded for sending your visitors off your site and onto someone else but, believe us, if you’ve built a good site you’ll get this traffic back and the fact that you have the links will pay dividends. Search Engines are no different from other media. They want their customers to keep coming back to them. They make their money by selling advertising on their sites (banner and Adwords) so they need to keep their user base high just like a newspaper or a magazine does. To do this their ‘product’ needs to be better than the competition. Their product is a facility to get a user onto other websites that are relevant, useful and interesting. So the job of the spider is to ‘sort out the wheat from the chaff’. If they keep presenting good sites on the first results page then their users will keep using that Search Engine and thus their advertising revenues will flourish.
So what makes a ‘good’ web site for a search engine? The answer lies in consumer behaviour. We all use the web in the same way as women use shops (sorry women everywhere but you know this next bit is true). Even if we find what we want from the first place we look we typically check out another half dozen alternatives just to see if there’s a better deal or an alternative product. Then we often go back to the first place and buy it! Given this web browsing behaviour Search Engines are looking to send their customers to sites that enable this kind of experience so their algorithms and spiders actively seek out sites that make this ‘site-hopping’ easier. In short they look more favourably on ‘hubs’ and ‘authorities’ that is sites that have lots of links to or from other sites of similar subject that also have the same kind of qualities as the original (good content, links work, pages load quickly, lots of pages etc). All these web sites that meet the quality criteria and share links between other sites that also meet the quality criteria are at the heart of the Internet. They get the best search engine rankings; they get more than their fair share of the traffic because they are providing the search engine customers with the right experience so search engines rank them higher.
It’s not an exclusive club. You can build a web site with a good link strategy simply by contacting web master of the sites you wish to exchange links with. For example, if you sell model aeroplanes on your web site you might want to share links with web sites that sell modelling paint or sites that display the real live planes that your models depict. Use your imagination and there are thousands of sites that do not compete with you but supplement your subject matter in a positive way. Email them and ask if they want to link to you and you to them. By adding these links to your site you will enhance your search engine performance. You will also get more traffic coming to your site from the sites you link with. Think about it as being in a shopping centre rather than a stand-alone shop on a corner. By being around other shops there are more customers and you will get more visits – that’s how shopping centres work and that’s how the web works.
Use secondary names correctly
Using a secondary domain name strategy is simple to do. By registering a small number of domain names that share the keywords on your site you will marginally increase your search engine ranking and thus your traffic. Furthermore you will get some hits from people who guess a URL and land on your main site if that URL is pointed thus. For example, if you own the aforementioned double-glazing.co.uk and your keywords are:
- Double glazing
- Replacement glass
- Window supplier
- Window installation
Then it would be wise to register a single domain name that reflects these keywords and point the name to double-glazing.co.uk. i.e. register replacement-glass.co.uk, window-supplier.co.uk and window-installation.co.uk. If the .co.uk is not available then you can still go for the alternative suffixes such as .net, .biz etc as the spiders only read the prefix
Create Meta Tags
Once the be all and end all of search engine listing Meta tags, whilst still important are no longer the main driver. However, it is still good practise to create tags for your site description and keywords which will be read by the search engine and will contribute to your ranking.
Submit the site to Search Engines
Easily forgotten…. Once you’ve created the site following the guidance above it is important t submit to search engines. If you have some external links the spiders will eventually find you anyway but you should always let them know directly that you are there. Most accept submission without charge though some will offer a faster visit from a spider if you pay. It typically takes 8 – 12 weeks for a free submission to work so be patient. Having submitted you now need to track visits to your site and how the site is performing. Check out our Search Engine Reports service and our WebStats too to understand how you can begin to track how your site is performing.
Traditional marketing
Having been focussed on Search Engine traffic do not neglect traditional marketing. Ensure that your domain name is pervasive throughout your business. Put it on your stationery, on your company vehicle, 12-foot letters on the side of your building would be good (we kid you not, lots of companies are doing this and getting results). You might consider registering yourcomapnyname.co.uk at Company’s House so that you own the trading title of your URL. It wouldn’t be the first time that an established business doesn’t completely own its brand. Keep an eye on Namebay.co.uk/news about new domain extensions. If you own the .co.uk you really should buy the .com and .net as a minimum and the .eu when this new extension is released next year. Also, ensure that you own the derivatives such as the hyphenated versions* - doubleglazing.co.uk + double-glazing.co.uk. The costs are trifling – from about £6 per two years per name it isn’t worth risking your Web brand when the cost of protection is so low.
- One other piece of advice. To get the best results you must own the domain associated with your main keyword and you should own the hyphenated version. Lots of users will guess on a web site name by typing in the keyphrase and adding .com or .co.uk. If you own that domain you get the traffic. Furthermore, by having the keyphrase in your domain name your search engine ranking will improve especially if you use hyphenation to separate the words; ‘doubleglazing’ is not a phrase that people search for because they will put a space between the ‘e’ and the ‘g’. A hyphenation in a domain name acts as a space for search engine spiders they will pick up the word ‘double and the word ‘glazing’ in your domain and add you to the results of searches for either phrase.
Make your site ‘sticky’
Having done the hard work of getting people to your web site you now have to work on getting them to spend money with you. First base is to get them to visit more regularly – this is referred to as ‘stickiness’. The more they visit the higher the likelihood that they will spend. Just like in the human world customers want to get comfortable with a supplier and be confident that they will be happy when they buy. You need to build a relationship with them through your web site and there are various ways to do this.
Changing content
How many times will you go back to a web site that never changes? Once, maybe twice? When you realise it’s always the same you stop going back – been there, read that. By keeping your content fresh and publishing new items on a weekly basis you give customers a reason to bookmark the site and keep coming back to you. As they do that relationship grows and they will eventually buy.
You should ideally keep a news section and post articles about the subject matter. This will make your site a knowledge base for customers. It will also help you build content and thus search engine ranking. Consider having regular special offers on your home page. If customers get to realise that you have a fantastic deal of the week they will get into the habit of regularly visiting in the hope they you have a deal that they want. If you have a picture on your home page, change it often. This will draw the users’ attention to the fact that something is different and thus they will explore further
Convert visitors to customers
(If you can’t do this last one the first two are pointless!)
Think back to the beginning. When you first enquired about a domain name or a web site you had a plan. It was about creating a business on the web to supplement or replace a bricks and mortar business. Most of your thoughts will have been about getting people to visit your web site. This is important but if this is all you do then you have wasted your time and money. The key is to convert those visitors into paying customers.
FACT: it is better to have fewer visitors with a good conversion rate than to have more visitors and poor conversion.
If you owned a shop would you be happy with thousands of windows shoppers but a very quiet till? Obviously not so have a web site strategy that does the same. Don’t waste energy with fancy graphics, annoying ‘Flash’ screens (which, by the way, block search engine spiders from even entering your site as well as encouraging users to click the back button!).
Don’t build a site for effect – build it to be effective
E-commerce
We can’t emphasis more strongly the importance of being able to take orders on the site. Every business sells something so e-commerce is applicable to all. If your products are all bespoke then package one of them so you can get it into a site catalogue. Even if the service is free or cheap just to get an interest it will engage customers with you and build that relationship.
Here’s a true story by way of demonstration. One of our members of staff pregnant and was Internet shopping for a child’s buggy. She used Google and eventually found the perfect model. The site was fantastic; lots of pictures, full specifications, pros and cons of each one, comparisons between various models. She finally chose the exact products she wanted only to find she couldn’t order it from them on line. So, she went back to Google, did another search for that exact model, and bough it online from a supplier who had e-commerce facility!
If you’ve reached this far into Namebay.co.uk you will have taken in, and forgotten, a lot of information. Let us leave one piece of data firmly in your mind.
As at July 2004 one in ten of all credit card transactions in the UK were done on the Internet.
Now do you understand why e-commerce is not just for other businesses?
Calls to action, Enquires and feedback
Whether or not you have an online shop you need to ask customers to act on something. Call now, enquire here, do this or that. If your site doesn’t give them the opportunity to respond in some way then how do you expect to get them to become a customer? Make sure you at least have a Contact page and preferably a feedback form. But nothing beats an online ordering facility.
